For this week’s tutorial, we’ll show you how to create Rey’s Triple Bun hairstyle from Star Wars Episode VII – The Force Awakens!
To see your own photo recreations of this style featured in our app, feel free to tag your photos on IG with: #CGHReyTripleBuns
These triple buns can work on shoulder-length to long hair and are very easy to create. That makes this a perfect DIY hairstyle. Since the buns are also nicely secured, we can recommend this as a great active hairstyle for sports.
Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, spray bottle, 1 small hair elastic, 3 ponytail holders, 3-4 small bobby pins, hairspray or spray wax {if desired}.
Time Requirement: 3-4 minutes
Skill Level: Easy

Step-by-Step Instructions:
- Begin by parting a small rectangular-shape section of hair on the top of the head and securing it with an small hair elastic…
- Now take your fingers at the top of the ears and run them upward to meet at the crown of head, parting out your first ponytail {be sure to include the hair that you previously secured with the elastic}…
- Smooth out this section with a comb, to ensure all the flyaways are down, and then secure with a ponytail holder, however, on the last twist of the elastic… only pull the hair about 1/3 – 1/2 way through the elastic {leaving the ends out below}…
- Step #3 creates a loop, like a fan bun, and it needs to be big enough to droop downward..
- Optional: If you have shorter hair you can take the ends here and twist them around the elastic and bobby pin them into place. If your hair is at least shoulder length, then leave the ends out.
- Repeat Steps #2-4 on your second bun…
- Then, gather up the remaining hair and repeat the same steps as above to create a third bun…
- To hide your remaining ends, using your fingers, create a hole in the hair at the nape of the neck and tuck the ends up into it and secure with a small bobby pin…
- Bobby pin any loose hair in your buns, and secure with hair spray {if desired}.
In the movie, it appears as if Rey used strips of sack cloth, or something similar, to tie off and secure her buns. Feel free to do the same for a more authentic look.
