Anna’s Coronation Hairstyle Inspired by Disney’s Frozen

Before Disney’s Frozen hit theaters in November, 2013, the team at DisneyStyle had already contacted us about filming three individual hairstyle tutorials from the styles worn by the movie’s main characters. {We love that they trust us so much!}Anna's Coronation Hairstyle Inspired by Disney's FrozenThat being said, it was a challenging task for us… especially since hairstyles worn by animated characters are more easily drawn, by hand or computer, than they are in being actually done in actual hair.Young girl modeling Disney Frozen inspired Anna's Coronation Hairstyle

Of the three hairstyles, this one was definitely one of the most difficult we have ever done, but simply gorgeous!

After seeing the movie twice, and looking at still frames from the movie, my girls and I figure that we spent close to 20 hours trying to recreate this on our mannequin head. This is the closest we could get to the actual style that Anna wore in the movie.

When I was stumped on the finishing touches, we checked in on good friend Princess Hairstyles‘ tutorial of this hairstyle and saw that she had the same difficulty. {Be sure to click the previous link to see her fabulous tutorial.}Young girl outside modeling Disney Frozen inspired Anna's Coronation Hairstyle

Portrait of young girl modeling Disney Frozen inspired Anna's Coronation Hairstyle What was the challenging step? Bringing up the hair from the bottom up and tucking it into the center of the bun, under the center hair. Instead, we opted to pull it up first before creating the bun, which makes this hairstyle much easier to achieve. Don’t you think it is simply beautiful?

The end result is a fabulous looking updo, something I have never seen before! We know you will love this hairstyle, and are happy to share it with you! {Be sure to watch until the very end, for a cute cameo by Sweet Pea singing, “Do you want to build a snowman?

Enjoy!

Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, water bottle, 2 hair elastics, 1 braid headband {matching hair color}, 6-8 bobby pins, 1 small golden bow comb barret, green ribbon, hairspray and pomade {as desired}.

Time Requirement: 7-10 minutes

Skill Level: Medium

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Begin by wetting the hair down until damp all the way through…
  2. Take a section from the top of your hair, from about eyebrow to eyebrow, and secure it into an elastic that matches your hair, toward the top of your head…
  3. Loosen the hair a little to add a little volume in front…
  4. Now, take a small section of hair from behind one ear and braid it in a simple braid…
  5. OPTION #1: Take the braid over the top of the head, like a headband, and bobby pin in place…
  6. OPTION #2:  Buy a fake braided headband, matching your hair color, and slide it into place and bobby pin it down…
  7. Next, carefully pull out a little hair above each ear and place in front of the braid {this will be the hair you use to cross over the top of the braid}…
  8. Pick up the two sections of hair near the ears and pull it back to the center of head and secure with an elastic {this should have created a pretty pullback over the top of the braid, near the ears}…
  9. Now gather up all the remaining hair and secure it into a rubber band a few inches above the base of your head…
  10. Twist  that new ponytail hair tightly, and begin to wrap it around to form an “0” shape on the back of the head, like seen in Anna’s hair {you will need to bobby pin this as you go, in order to secure it appropriately}…
  11. Once you have create the “0” shaped bun, tuck under and hide the ends with a few bobby pins…
  12. Now, gently pull on the hair in the middle of the “0” so that it pops out a little…
  13. Using any similar-looking hair accessory or ribbon, and place them inside the bottom of the “0” shaped bun, to complete the look.
